Manchester United demolish Arsenal 8-2
70City scored 5? We'll score 3 more!
Spurs were given a footballing lesson by Manchester City, who won 5-1 away from home. This took City top of the table with 3 wins out of 3 with a goal difference of +9. Usual slow starters to the season, United would need to score 6! yes 6 goals to go top of the table after only 3 games. Facing a team like Arsenal, this seemed to be impossible.
Manchester United are top of the table
Ferguson stuck with the same team that beat Spurs by 3 goals last week, which paid off as Anderson's lob was met by Danny Welbeck who continued his form after a spectacular second half against Tottenham and beat Djourou with his strength to head home United's first of many. Welbeck was forced off with a hamstring injury after a quarter of the game, being replaced by Chicharito. He's set to miss around a month and will not be available for England.
Evans pulled down Walcott in the box to get the spot light on David De Gea who stunningly dived to his right to save Van Persie's penalty. The whole team ran over to De Gea to congratulate him on his heroic save. There were 'De Gea' chants going around Old Trafford.
The second goal, the goal of the game, was scored by Ashley Young. A brilliant curling finesse shot from outside the penalty box which found the top right corner of Szczesny's goal. Arshavin, who was fortunate to get only a yellow for getting his studs into Young's leg and should've been sent off in the first half as once again he got all player and no ball with a studs up challenge. For those of you who say Howard Webb gives United the decisions, Jenkison should've been sent off too as he was the last man and stopped Young from a definite goal scoring opportunity, but only given a yellow. Rooney converted the free kick in to the top left corner, Szczesny got his finger tips to it, but could not do anything about it.
Moments before the close of the first half Rooney saw Szczesny off his line and tried a shot from 15 yards inside his own half which was saved at the end. Walcott got a goal back for Arsenal just before the whistle, his shot went through De Gea's legs.
The second half started with Arsenal playing well until United continued where they had left off. Nani tried a cheeky chip instead of finding Wayne Rooney to extend the lead. Rooney repeated his free kick with Ashley Young and completely fooled the Arsenal Keeper who expected the ball to go on his left, wrong footed, could only watch it go into the back of the net.
Smalling tore down the right flank to find Wazza who played Nani through to a one on one chance and he chipped the ball to the side of the keeper. After celebrating his goal, Nani and Anderson replaced by Giggs and Park. Rooney took a jaw dropping chip from outside the box only to hit the upright and the ball went out of play. Park linked up with Young to slot home a left footer.
Van Persie vollied the ball into the corner from a few yards away from the goal to make it 6-2, nothing much De gea could do about that one. Jenkinson was shown a second yellow and was sent off after bringing down Hernandez as the last man. Walcott brought down Patrice Evra in the box to win Rooney a hat-trick sealing penalty. Arsenal have more red cards than points this season.
Giggs set up Young in the 90th minute as he curled the ball into the same top right corner as in the exact the same way as he did in the first half.
Ashley Young had a terrific outing, showing that he has fit in wonderfully with 2 goals and 3 assists. Wayne Rooney took home the match ball after scoring from 2 free kicks and a penalty, finally an answer to free kicks and penalties after the departure of Cristiano. Wayne Rooney has now scored 152 goals for Man United.
524 passes were attempted by United and 454 were completed, that's a 86.6% success rate with Jones getting 90.5% and Cleverley was successful 89.9% of the times.
